1. I am sure others know better than me, but the PoW and Repulse appear to have been an exceptional case. They were sunk because the aircraft carrier due to accompany them was unavailable, because their position appears to have been given away, and because of the bravery and very high level of skill demonstrated by the Japanese pilots.

What their loss does not demonstrate is that the battleship as such was 'outmoded' but that battleships needed to be fought as part of a larger battle group. Such as now attends every USN carrier.

It might also be worth a moment's reflection on the number of 'planes required to sink the Yamato, sailing alone.

2. Quite clearly the reason that Japan might wish to have something other than US drones and missiles in Okinawa and elsewhere is that China would have to kill Americans to get what it wants. Which, pace Titus Spence, makes the views of Okinawans as relevant to this national question as their views on sewerage projects in Tokyo. One might also observe that, should they not want to be Japanese, then, far from being independent, they're Chinese.
